Sony Xperia X1

Sony Xperia X1Hitting the UK mid/end 2008, the Xperia X1 looks to be Sony’s answer to Nokia’s announcement of the N96 which is also due out around the same time.

The Xperia is Sony’s first multimedia touchscreen device, the first Sony device to run on Windows Mobile and it creates the first sub brand from Sony Ericsson with their popular Cyber-shot and Walkman devices originating from Sony.

Firstly the design is distinctive, an Arc slider design, this gives the phone a unique feel, simply slide the screen upwards to reveal the wide-pitch QWERTY keyboard. In addition a 3inch Wide touchscreen VGA display, black metal body, it looks very sophisticated and stylish.

The Xperia lets you navigate the phone via 3 different methods with a full QWERTY Keyboard, Touchscreen and optical joystick catering for everyone.

What’s on the inside? running on Windows Mobile most will be familiar with the web, organiser and multimedia applications, combine that with quick and easy access via 3G internet (lacking in the current iPhone) the Xperia experience looks very promising.

Other features that add further appeal to the Xperia X1 include a 3.2 Megapixel Camera, Video, Push email and a truly mobile experience with 3G, Internet and Wifi features.

Sony are pitching the Xperia at top end consumers who want the best of everything and it certainly seems to tick all the boxes, further more Sony Ericsson’s marketing spend is estimated to increase 25% this year so expect to see a large scale marketing campaign in 2008 for the Xperia X1.

2008 The Year Of The Mobile Designer?

Armani Mobile PhoneWant your mobile to match your outfit? Well 2008 looks to be the year as fashion designers continue to cash in on a multimillion pound market.

Dior and Swarovski are said to be the latest names to be unveiling mobile phones this year and Tag Heuer have already announced a summer release.

Insiders have predicted the next 3 years will see an influx of non traditional mobile brands including fashion designers with a potential 20% global market share on offer selling around 200 million handsets a year.

To date Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Armani have joined forces with manufacturers and despite their premiums have been a huge success, other designers to tread the mobile catwalk have been Ted Baker, Levi’s, Mandarina Duck and Porsche.

Lets all hope Burberry don’t hear of this emerging market…

Nokia N96

Nokia N96Hot off the press in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress comes the announcement of Nokia’s much anticipated N96, the next step after the incredibly popular N95. Nokia’s N96 certainly pulls no punches and this time it really looks the business.

The design is in keeping with many of the designs recently released by Nokia - with a smooth flat black gloss finish with subtle touches of silver.

It packs a big display screen as well coming in at 2.8″ which is just as well considering Nokia are pushing it as the multimedia phone, ‘personal window to entertainment’ which targets video and TV so heavily. Covering popular media formats such as MPEG4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video will make it video easily accessible to many users.

The Nokia N96 also features a DVB-H receiver which in some regions will be able to receive live TV with an up to date TV guide. With its massive 16 GB (gigabytes) of memory and an expandable memory slot you will be able to store up to 40 hours of video content as well as the usual music and photo files which you can take with its 5 mega-pixel camera. The memory slot allows for a total capacity of 24 GB.

One nice new feature is the N96’s kick stand which allows you to effectively stand the device up for hands-free viewing.

The Nokia N96 would not be complete without great sound features. It comes complete with 3D surround sound so you can truly be immersed in the action on screen.

Like the N95 the new N96 features sat nav with A-GPS using rich maps for a complete experience.

The Nokia N96 is due in Q3 of 2008 and it is sure to be a red hot handset with already anticipation levels high.

Don’t forget to keep checking as we’ll have the Nokia N96 deals as soon as they are available. Let us know what you think with the Nokia N96 reviews.

Apple Crashes Smartphone Party

Apple iPhoneFor all the furore surround Apple’s iPhone about whether it has been a success or a flop the figures speak for themselves. Apple has now positioned itself 3rd in the world ranking of smartphone sales during Q4 of 2007.

Apple shipped 2,320,840 iPhone’s putting itself 3rd beating Motorola who shipped 2,301,260. It highlights the recent struggles that Motorola is now having.

Apple did not just beat Motorola but also Palm and all other Windows Mobile device suppliers in the market.

In first though came Nokia with 18,802,480 devices shipped followed by RIM who shipped 4,046,860 of their popular Blackberry device.

This shows clearly Apple still has a long way to go if it is to catch the leading pack now who combined have over 64% of the market.

Apple’s strength in sales have been in the US where it has struggled in Europe.

The journey for Apple has clearly started but it has a long way to go with still many opting for devices which pack more punch in terms of hardware but it will be interesting in the months to come should Apple introduce features such as 3G.

Motorola Woes

Motorola WoesMotorola has been struggling for some time now in the mobile phone industry as shown by its poor sales figures throughout 2007.

News is now beginning to circle that it could be looking to ditch it’s mobile phone products altogether and focus on its other fields.

It’s a fall from grace for an American giant who had amazing success with the Motorola RAZR but has fell behind the leading pack significantly since with Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and Samsung all making huge strides, not to mention the emergence of Apple.

Motorola MOTORAZR2 V8

Many consumers just feel that Motorola have not added anything new to their recipe book and follow fashionable trends well enough. The software on their phones not being quite as innovative as its main rivals.

Whatever happens Motorola needs a serious shake up in the Mobile Phone department after it lost $1.2 billion in 2007. Q4 of 2007 showed Motorola sold 40.9 million handsets while giant Nokia sold 133.5 million.

Motorola’s share price rose by 10% at the news it could spin off or sell it’s company.

Tricky times lie ahead but Motorola is not all doom and gloom. A revamped line up and re-branding may go a long way to turning consumers but is it too late?
