Android Handset Sales Leap 350% in UK
Sales figures for handsets running on Google’s Android Operating System have leapt by an incredible 350% in the last quarter, sales figures by research analyst GfK Retail and Technology reveal, meaning that an average of one in ten handsets in the UK now run on Android OS.
The amazing increase in numbers came at a time when an increase in contract sales was measured at just 1% for the same time period.
One of the main benefits with the Android OS is the increasingly wide range of devices available, giving consumers an unprecedented number of smartphone devices to choose from, ranging from small pocket sized devices to huge PDA style products, across a range of manufacturers including HTC, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung and LG.
The Android OS has gained a significant following with application developers, and the number of increasingly professional quality applications is growing daily. With Google recently changing the terms of sale in their Android Market developer distribution agreement to allow carrier billing, it will be even easier to purchase applications through the Android Market, as the cost will be added to your monthly invoice.
The increasing popularity of Android indicates a growing awareness of the OS amongst more mainstream consumers, and puts it at the forefront of competition against the ever popular Apple iPhone.
