In the modern mobile smartphone world, it is not enough to just release handsets that pack in every feature you can think of, you also need to be updating existing handset firmware as well as looking to bring new firmware to market for new and some existing devices. So you see Android constantly updating, adding new features, Apple too with their new iPhone OS 4.0 soon to be released, and Nokia who are always offering updates to their handsets and working on new Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 operating systems.
BlackBerry, themselves having a busy week with the announcement of new handsets are also looking to release a newer version of the BlackBerry operating system, OS 6.0, sometime during Q3 2010. The new OS is expected to be installed as default on forthcoming products, and is also expected to be backward compatible on handsets such as the BlackBerry Storm 2, Bold 9700 as well as the new Pearl 3G and Bold 9650.
