BlackBerry have given us another sneak peek of their upcoming new Operating System, OS 6.0. As well as on forthcoming devices, the new OS is rumoured to be compatible with some of the more recent BlackBerry devices, such as the BlackBerry 9700. This would be good news for many loyal BlackBerry users; the videos of the new OS seem to indicate a touch-based interface, which would restrict availability on current devices to the Storm and Storm 2, hardly the most popular of recent BlackBerry handsets.
The new features of OS 6.0 include integrated feeds from social networks, a universal search option, and the all new web browser, which offers a significantly improved browsing experience. Other UI improvements include application tabs, which facilitates simple switching between different application groups, an improved media player layout and pinch to zoom when viewing web pages.
Whether the new OS will be enough to keep BlackBerry devices fresh and competitive remains to be seen, but it is good to see RIM striving to deliver an improved experience for consumers.
