Google has officially announced the launch of Android OS 2.3 and the first device to run the latest version of the popular operating system will be the Google Nexus S, also announced today.
Google claim that Android 2.3, codenamed Gingerbread, is the fast version of the mobile OS to date, and it brings support for some new features, including Near Field Communication (NFC), along with a new keyboard, better support for multi touch, internet calling, and a new updated user interface.
Other features retained from previous versions of Android include support for WiFi Hotspot, and the OS also allows for true multi tasking and allows full access web browsing.
The Nexus S will be the first device to include Android 2.3, and the update will then be rolled out to other devices, with the Nexus One the first in line to receive the much anticipated update. Google have confirmed that the Nexus range will always be first to get Android updates. How long it takes Android 2.3 to appear on any other manufacturer devices is anyone's guess. Given that some devices have yet to receive updates to FroYo, this could a long term, on going issue.
