Google have been busy today, announcing the availability of the Google Nexus S, as well as the launch of the next incarnation of the Android OS, Android 2.3, also known by the codename Gingerbread.
There was a lot of rumour about a follow up to the Nexus One a while back, and now Google have officially confirmed the handset, along with detail of the new version of Android.
The Nexus S will be produced in collaboration with Samsung, and is powered by a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, and sports a large, 4.0 inch touchscreen with a pixel resolution of 800 x 480. The device also offers an internal memory capacity of 16 GB, and will come pre-installed with a variety of Google apps and supports new features including true multi-tasking, NFC support, internet calling, WiFi hotspot and full web browsing. There is also an onboard 5.0 Megapixel camera, with Flash and video record facility, plus full WiFi 802.11 b/g/n support and Bluetooth 2.1
One of the more important features on a mobile phone, and often most lacking is battery. Google and Samsung hope that the inclusion of a 1500 mAh Li-ion battery will go some way to resolving the problem of smartphones with batteries that fail to last a day of normal usage. Google have also stated that the Nexus devices will always be first to receive future updates of the Android OS, as well as having first access to new Google applications.
As part of the Nexus brand, the Google Nexus S is designed to deliver the very best 'pure Google' experience, with an unlocked, unbranded, unfiltered Android service, along with the latest apps and updates.
The Nexus S is expected to go on sale in the UK on the 20th December.
