With the success of the LG Cookie, one thing has become apparent to LG, and that is there is a huge market of users who want a decent sized, smart looking, easy to use touchscreen device. This shouldn’t really come as a surprise to anyone who follows the mobile market with even just a passing interest, and the raft of touchscreen based devices from the likes of Samsung and Nokia in recent times bears this fact out.
To capitalise on this, LG have announced their latest touch enabled phone, the LG GD510 Pop. A funky looking device, the Pop looks set to pick up the baton from the Cookie and lead the way on both the prepay and contract markets. The display on the GD510 is a generous sized 3.0 TFT screen, supporting up to 256,000 colours, and with a resolution of 240 x 400. Despite the generous display, the GD510 still manages to retain a compact shape, thanks to the extremely narrow bezel around the display – there is literally millimetres between the display and edge of the handset down both the right and left hand side of the phone. Even with most touchscreen devices, there is usually a few buttons under the main display, but on the Pop there is just one, situated on the lower right hand corner. This multi function key operates as both a send/end call key, and is also the select/cancel key, all rolled into one. Too alleviate any confusion, the operation of the key is determined by a backlight, for all positive options it lights up green, and for all negative operations it lights up red. Not so great for colour blind people, I guess, but a unique way of keeping keys to a minimum, nonetheless.
One of the more unique features on the LG Pop is the option to add a solar panel to the back of the phone. Solar energy options on mobile phones have been far and few between, and LG are to be applauded on considering this feature for the Pop. It is most likely the solar panel will be sold as a separate accessory.
The Pop will be rich in multimedia options. First we find a fully featured mobile media player, supporting a vast array of media formats for video and audio, including MP3, AAC, WAV and eAAC+ as well as MP4, H.363 and H.264. There is also a stereo FM radio, with RDS, with the option to store your favourite radio stations for easy switching between stations, and the Pop also sports a 3.2 Megapixel camera, with video recording option. There is a built in email client, so sending images and video clips directly from the device is a simple matter, just choose your delivery method between email and MMS, and your content will be on its way to friends and family in an instant.
Memory on the LG GD510 Pop is abundant, with an internal memory capacity at 8GB, and with most likely a MicroSD memory card expansion slot. Considering that just a short while ago, internal memory ran in MB’s, not GB’s it really is testament to how far the mobile industry has moved on that we now find mid range budget handsets bring such a large amount of memory to market. There are plenty of data connection options set on the Pop, with the device running over 3G. HSDPA is not confirmed, but it is expected to be included when the Pop is released in the next few weeks. For those areas where 3G is not so readily available, the Pop includes data transfer over EDGE, HSCSD and GPRS. For local data connections the Pop includes a microUSB connection port, for connecting the handset to a PC with a MicroUSB data cable, as well offering Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support.
When it is all weighed up, the Pop may not swing the interest of the smartphone purist, but that market is still in a minority to the masses who want simple, easy to use, good looking devices, which the Pop certainly is. Add in a nice, bright clear touchscreen and the Pop appears to have all the ingredients needed to ensure it will sell in big numbers.
The LG GD510 Pop is expected to be released into the European market in mid October, with pricing to be confirmed nearer release.
