The initial thing you notice with Viewty Smart is just how compact it is. After all, this is a phone that has a huge display, measuring 3.0 inches across, it has an excellent high quality 8.0 megapixel camera, and has many extra features, yet it is only 12.4mm thick. Amazing. The display itself is a TFT touchscreen, supporting up to 16 million colours. Pixel count is an impressive 800 x 480; it is clear that video playback on this device is going to look really good. A built in accelerometer allows the display to auto-rotate, and multi touch is also available. This means the handset will accept multiple selections at the same time, which should greatly enhance the gaming experience.
The device is powered by the same UI as you would find on the LG Arena. This is eminently simple to navigate, and allows for various display options. This includes the effective CUBE UI, which offers simple rotation through a four sided cube, which in turn offers shortcut icons to most often used features within certain menu systems, such as messaging, multimedia, and so on.
The camera on the Viewty Smart is about as good as you can currently get on a mobile phone. An 8.0 megapixel camera, with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, the GC900 offers auto and manual focussing, an intelligent shot option, image stablisation, face recognition, smile recognition and also includes support for geo tagging. There is a power LED flash available, for lighting shots in low light level conditions. The video recording specs on the Viewty Smart are also pretty impressive, with video capture available at up to 720 x 480 pixels at 30 fps. QVGA time lapse and slow motion video recording options are also available. TV Out is also available, so captured videos and images can easily be viewed on a nearby TV screen.
As is now becoming common on LG handsets of this style, the media player onboard is well equipped to deal with pretty much all that you can throw at it.MP3, AAC, AAC+ and WMA files are supported for music playback, with the device also able to handle MPEG4, DivX and XviD video files. Dolby Mobile Sound Enhancement is also included as standard, promising a superior playback experience.
But it is not just here where the Viewty Smart excels. Under the bonnet, so to speak, we find the LG GC900 is powered to the max with all the latest in communication technology, giving quick access to the web, allowing for simple and fast sharing of all your media onboard. Firstly, we find the device is equipped a GPS receiver, as well as supporting aGPS; this works really well with Google maps and makes a fine complimentary satellite navigation system. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.0, support for WiFi 802.11 b/g, and HSDPA Mobile Broadband for super fast web browsing, with transfer speeds of up to 7.2Mbps.
The Viewty Smart also scores well on memory; not only does it support Micro SD cards up to 16GB, but it has 1.5GB internal memory, as standard.
It is a sign of how spoilt we are in the UK market right now, that a device with the specification of the LG GC900 Viewty Smart can be met with a certain level of indifference. We are fast becoming accustomed to high spec, high quality touchscreen phones, yet this phone has enough not to be lost in a sea fast becoming overcrowded with also-rans.
