Recently announced as the Nokia Surge, on the ATT network in America, the Nokia 6760 Slide is the generic version that will be launching imminently in the UK and Europe. The Nokia 6760 Slide is a messaging focussed device, with a strong emphasis on social communication. The inclusion of a slide out QWERTY keyboard enhances messaging input, and joins a growing list of QWERTY based devices aimed at the youth market. The QWERTY keyboard has a standard top three row 10 button layout, with a further five keys on the fourth row. The middle four buttons on the top three rows are used for entering numbers and have each corner coloured to co-ordinate with the function key. When closed, the layout is almost identical to most other Nokia phones, with a Navi key underneath the main display for navigating and selecting menu features, two soft option keys, one either side of the Navi key and with separate send and end call keys.
Although the 6760 Slide has a QWERTY keyboard, the dimensions are not overly large. We find the 6760 measuring in at 97.5 x 58 x 15.5mm, and weighing in at 124g. The main display is disappointingly small, given these dimensions, at only 2.4 inches, with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, which is the same size as the display on the Nokia N82. As with most other Nokia devices, the screen is a TFT display, supporting up to 16 million colours.
The 6760 Slide comes complete with a full set of communication options. On board the handset is pre-loaded with applications for Google Talk and Windows Live Messenger. Additionally, there is easy access to sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. There is a built in Email client as standard, plus the phone should work with the Nokia Messaging application, for push email support. Access to the internet is via HSDPA Mobile Broadband, with speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps possible. The handset offers quad band GSM support, and also comes with GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE. Disappointingly, WiFi is not included on the phone. The menu system is going to be familiar to anyone who has used a S60 Nokia recently; the 6760 Slide operates on S60v3.2 which offers the latest version of the S60 smartphone platform. Being open source, the platform allows for additional applications to be loaded onto the phone, and there are literally hundreds of games and applications to choose from.
Other features on the phone are as expected on a modern multimedia device. We find a 3.2 Megapixel camera (which, interestingly, is superior to the Surge, which has only a 2.0 Megapixel camera), with the camera capable of recording video a QVGA resolution. The 6760 Slide has full media capabilities; alongside a stereo FM radio, the handset has a full music player, supporting MP3 and AAC files, and can handle MPEG4 and WMV video files. There is an option to add your own headset, but the jack point is only 2.5mm, so you will need an adaptor for most headsets. Internal memory is set at 128MB which can be expanded with MicroSD memory cards. The 6760 Slide ships with a 2GB card, with the maximum capacity supported being 8GB
We also find a built in GPS receiver here, complete with aGPS support. The phone has support for Nokia Maps, and will be compatible with the latest version 3.0 GPS usage will impact little on the battery standby, as the 6760 Slide ships with the BP-4L battery, which is the same as that which comes on the 5800, N97 and E71.
There is a lot to like about the 6760 Slide, it looks great in black, and is also available in red and white. The operating platform is tried and tested, and the addition of a QWERTY keyboard makes messaging a breeze. Yet, despite all the positives, you can’t help looking at the 6760 and be left feeling that there’s nothing new here. There’s no innovation, camera is adequate and no more, and really we’ve seen this all before, in some form or another. All we hope is with the rumoured Xseries and Cseries devices due from Nokia sometime soon that we will start to see some real innovative products.

I remain a little dubious myself. Can't see the 6760 capturing the imagination. I assume you are an LG fan, Charlotte?
