Seemingly a victim of the success of their star device, O2 have recently admitted that the explosion in popularity of the iPhone has had a detrimental effect on the data performance of their network. The major problems for O2 appear to have been around the London area, with some customers unable to make or receive calls as the network buckles under the pressure.

O2 claim that they are pumping millions of pounds into improving the network capacity in effected areas, with up to 200 additional base stations being installed in the London area. Whether this will help the network cope with the New Year rush remains to be sent. Typically the New Year period is the busiest time for mobile networks, with O2 measuring 166 million text messages sent across the airwaves last year.

It remains to be seen whether Vodafone or Orange suffer similar problems with iPhone network overload in the coming months.
