Opera have released their State of the Mobile Web report for June 2010, and as well as general browsing habits they have also looked at visits to mobile sports websites, to tie in with the recent World Cup.
Opera Mini is available on a wide range of handsets, across all platforms and handset types. The app really comes into its own on mid range devices that come with an average default web browser, but is even popular on Android devices and the iPhone, even though the default browser on those products is generally very good.
In the latest round up, the top ten general mobile websites visited by UK users of Opera mini in June were as Follows:
1. Google.com 2. Facebook.com 3. BBC.co.uk 4. YouTube.com 5. Wikipedia.org 6. my.opera.com 7. Live.com 8. Yahoo.com 9. Pocketgear.com 10. ebay.co.uk
The top 10 handsets in June using Opera Mini were:
1. Apple iPhone 2. Sony Ericsson W395 3. Nokia 2330 4. Nokia 6300 5. Sony Ericsson S312 6. BlackBerry 9700 7. LG KC910 8. Nokia 6700 9. BlackBerry 8520 10. LG KE970
The World Cup was the big event in June and July, and visits to sports sites were of particular interest. The Fifa site was popular across all countries, whilst in the UK the other sites in the top five were skysports.com, goal.com, eurosport.yahoo.com and livescore.com.
We all know that Spain were the eventual winners of the World Cup tournament, but Opera decided to play their own Opera Mini Web World Cup. Taking the same countries in the last 16 of the World Cup, on each day the games were played, the number of page views and users were calculated, to show which country browsed the most per person. In a tight fought competition, the eventual winner was Chile, beating Argentina in the final. South America were well represented, with Uruguay also in the last four. It really does go to show the global reach and popularity of Opera Mini.
