If there is one handset over recent times that has raised more opinion than any other, then it would have to be the Apple iPhone. The iPhone splits opinion between those who berate its lack of top end features and those who admire its fluid user interface. One positive effect of the iPhone, though, has been the development of the iPhone Application Store. Suddenly, a whole host of applications began to spring up, all offering to add further functionality to this handset, in true smartphone style. In this article we are going to look at a few of the most popular applications available for the iPhone right now.

iPhone-Skype

Skype is one of those services that has truly made a difference to the way we communicate. With Skype, it is now easier and cheaper to keep in touch with those who mean the most to us. Via calls and instant messaging, keeping in touch was never cheaper, and now the advantages of Skype are easily available on the move thanks to the new Skype application for the iPhone. Once signed in you can check the online status of your contacts and then initiate a conversation with them.

iPhone - Sky Plus

Another new iPhone application that has become an instant hit, the application from SKY gives you access to a wide range of SKY services. One of the instant bonuses with the SKY app is the ability to remotely set your SKY+ box directly from your handset; ideal for those moments when you rush out and forget to set record for your favourite programme. You can also access the SKY 7 day Electronic Programme Guide, to check what’s on and when. We can only hope that future updates will allow us to download and view SKY programmes on the move.

iPhone - Google Earth

Google Earth is an amazing enough application for a PC; to have the same access on a handheld device is something else. With the Google Earth app, you can view the same global satellite and aerial imagery available on a PC. Tilting the iPhone adjusts the view, so you can see in more detail various terrains, see breath taking panorama and browse through the numerous geo-located photos from thousands of users from around the globe. Using Google Earth you can read relevant geo-located Wikipedia articles, locate yourself at your current location and search for user-recommended places of interest. Google Earth is deservedly one of the top applications available for the iPhone.

iPhone - Facebook

The success behind social networking sites such as Facebook is driven by the same desire to communicate that makes mobile phones such a popular device to own. Therefore, it is simple common sense to marry together mobile access to sites like Facebook, and the Facebook application for iPhone is a delight to use. Like all the best mobile applications, the layout is simple and uncluttered. Tabs across the top of the screen give you access to your news feed, latest notifications and friend requests, whilst along the bottom of the screen you can select through your friends, go to chat, read messages in your inbox and view your own profile page. It is in the simplicity of use that really makes the Facebook application stand out from other similar applications.

iPhone - iLevel

The last application on our list of favourites is one that makes you ask “Why did no-one think of this before?” Unique to say the least, iLevel simply turns your iPhone into a spirit level. A certain amount of sensitivity calibration is required when you use the application for the first time, then you can use the application as a digital spirit level. Perfect for keeping that bookshelf straight.

And that completes the list of our five favourite iPhone applications. There are many to choose from. What would your five favourites be?
