It’s no secret that we are big fans of Opera Mini, in all its forms, on all platforms. From little handsets that support java, to big full blown smatphones, Opera Mini delivers a high standard of web browsing performance.
Back in February Opera demo’d the Opera Mini browser running on an Apple iPhone at the Mobile World Congress, and was submitted to Apple for approval on March 23rd. We posted just the other day that the browser had been approved and was available for download, and in the first day, Opera Mini was downloaded over 1,000,000 times, and shot straight to the top of the free apps chart in 22 featured Apple App Stores.
Initial tests have shown that Opera Mini can be up to 6 times quicker than the standard iPhone Safari browser, due to the data compression techniques Opera use. This can be of real benefit to iPhone users who are regularly in areas where 3G or HSDPA data speeds are not available.
Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software is quoted as saying “Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic,” and “With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users.”
