It is fair to say when the original LG Prada phone was launched, it didn’t catch the imagination with its technical specification. But, what it lacked in spec it more than made up for in looks, the LG Prada just oozed class. With the imminent launch of the LG KF900 Prada 2, what improvements can we look forward to? One thing people are learning is text entry on a simple touch screen phone isn’t so comfortable.
Haptic feedback (the vibration you feel when you touch the screen) helps, but it would seem nothing compares to a good keyboard. This is the most noticeable addition to the new LG Prada 2. The Prada II is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard, to enhance data input. As the keyboard slides out the phone automatically rotates into landscape mode, thanks to the built in accelerometer. The screen found on the KF900 is the same as that found on its predecessor, measuring in at 3 inches, supporting up to 256,000 colours and 240 x 400 pixels.
Another improvement to the original Prada phone is an upgrade to the on board camera. The Prada II sports a 5.0 megapixel camera, with autofocus and a flash. Video recording is also markedly improved, with the Prada II able to record at 30 fps in widescreen VGA resolution. The Prada will also offer an onboard photo and video editor, so you can make changes to your captured images on the phone, without needing to transfer them to a PC.
Connectivity is another area where LG have made significant improvements. The original Prada did not even have 3G connectivity, but with this new updated model, we find not only 3G, but also HSDPA Mobile Broadband and WiFi. There is also support for the next version of Bluetooth, version 2.1 The improvements in Bluetooth 2.1 allow for easier pairing to headsets and other compatible Bluetooth equipment.
The KF900 sports an impressive music player, with support for various music formats including MP3, WAV, AAC, AAC+, WMA and RA. It is interesting that RA support is included; most BBC streaming audio is done in Real Audio format, so it is very likely that you will be able to listen to BBC programming via the media player. Just make sure you have a decent data plan on your network package, or ideally log in via a WiFi hotspot. For those lighter music moments the Prada II also includes an FM Radio player so you can listen to your favourite FM radio stations.
Memory is ample, with support for Micro SD cards up to 8GB in size, which will allow for 1,000’s of songs, pictures and video clips to be stored.
With the LG Prada 2, it seems LG have looked at all the weaknesses on the first model and upgraded features in all the right areas, whilst keeping the same classy looks. The handset is due to launch in early 2009, it remains to be seen if this product is as popular as its predecessor, the touch screen market is much tougher than last year, and there is a lot more competition.
