Samsung Jet HandsetThe Samsung S8000, popularly known as the Samsung Jet, is the latest flagship handset from the Korean manufacturer, packing a high tec punch with an amazing set up of features. A smart style touch screen device, the Samsung Jet benefits from progressive work made on various Samsung touch screen devices, and offers probably the best user interface yet from Samsung, using the latest version TouchWiz operating system.

The thing that instantly stands out on the Jet is the amazing screen. Fully touch enabled, the resistive style touch screen uses AMOLED which offers a richer, clearer colour definition on the handset, whilst at the same time needing less battery power. The screen measures in at a very impressive 3.1 inches, 480 x 800 pixels, and supports up to 16 million colours. Pictures, video clips and background images are therefore rich in colour and definition, and the screen on the Samsung Jet is probably one of the best available. The phone has an auto-rotate feature, so photos can be easily browsed in widescreen clarity, further enhancing the usability of the phone.

Incorporated into the handset is a high quality 5.0 Megapixel camera, complete with auto focus and LED flash. Image enhancements include face, smile and blink detection, wide dynamic range and images can be geo tagged, recording the location the image was taken into the EXIF data of the digital image. This is proving to be a popular feature on handsets, and allows friends and family to view the location the image was taken when viewed using services such as Flickr and Google Earth. The camera is fully capable when it comes to video recording, being able to record video clips at up to 720 x 480 resolution, at 30 fps.

Data connectivity is also completely covered with the Jet. All high speed data services are available, including HSDPA Mobile Broadband and WLAN, allowing you to hook up your handset to your own home network via WiFi as well as surfing the web at your local coffee house or café, wherever a WiFi hotspot is available. Bluetooth 2.1 is included on the handset, which makes pairing to compatible Bluetooth devices a simpler process, and there is A2DP support, allowing for wireless audio stereo streaming. The Jet also has a microUSB port, allowing for easy access to your home PC or laptop, to quickly and easily transfer images and music to or from the device. Making a regular back up of information stored on your handset is very important; leaving images on the phone to which you have an emotional attachment without backing them up is a serious error.

The Samsung Jet is well equipped to handle most popular digital formats, for both music and video; the music player will playback MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV files, whilst the video player can easily handle MPEG4 and WMV as well as XviD and DivX files. This pretty much means any file downloaded from the internet should load up and play on the device without issue. There is also a Stereo FM radio included, with RDS support, and you can record from the radio directly to the device. Memory is plentiful, with the Jet coming in two variants, with either an internal capacity of 2GB or 8GB. This can then be expanded further with the addition of MicroSD memory cards, with the Jet being able to handle memory cards up to 16GB in size.

We also find the Samsung Jet comes with an internal GPS receiver, supported by aGPS, and uses Route 66 mapping software, so you can use the Jet as a personal, portable SatNav device. A digital compass is also available, to help orientate you.

The Samsung Jet is not a smartphone, in the traditional sense, but applications written in Java format can be added to increase functionality on the phone; this means popular applications such as the Google Mail app and Opera Mini will install without issue.

Overall the Samsung Jet is a smart looking device, coming in a nice jet black colour; it is compact and light, measuring in at just 11.9mm thick and weighing only 110g. The latest version TouchWiz interface is a dream to use, and the many additional extra touches show how much thought has gone into designing this product, things such as smart unlock, where you trace a shape on the screen to unlock it, or flip to silent, where turning the phone over immediately puts the ringing phone into silent mode. The Samsung Jet has the looks, and has the features to back it up, and should satisfy even the most demanding of phone users. Available now from £19.57 per month on contract.
