The Corby range of handset from Samsung have proven to very popular since their recent release, with the easy to use touchscreen devices catching the eye with their customisable back covers, which Samsung call Fashion Jackets. Undoubtedly the kings of the touchscreen device, in terms of wide popularity across a number of handsets, Samsung are pushing on with further releases under the Corby name, with an ever higher specification.
This policy is borne out with the Samsung M5650 Lindy, a compact and lightweight touchscreen handset that packs in a high level feature set whilst retaining a low to medium level market entry price point. The M5650 sports a comfortable QVGA capacitive touchscreen, supporting up to 256,000 colours and measuring 2.8 inches point to point. Weighing in at just 98g, the handset measures up at 105 x 57 x 12mm, compact measurements that feel well balanced in the hand. The M5650 Lindy runs on the TouchWiz operating system, which uses bright colourful icons, within a well laid out menu. From the main screen a widget bar is hidden down the left hand side of the display, which can store the widgets when you don’t want them on the homescreen, helping to keep things ordered and tidy.
Given the pricing level of the 5650 Lindy, the inclusion of WiFi is a welcome surprise here, as is the availability of HSDPA Mobile Broadband, with the Lindy supporting up to 7.2mbps where available. A quad band GSM phone, the 5650 also offers GPRS and EDGE as a backup for when 3G is not available, and for local connections there is Bluetooth and a Micro USB port for connecting to a PC.
The Lindy includes a 3.2 Megapixel camera, with autofocus, as well as a front facing video camera for video calling. Video recording is also enabled, and whilst the device may not win any awards for imaging quality, captured media is certainly good enough for sharing across the multitude of social networks available, and can also be sent via email as the 5650 has a built in email client with support for multiple email accounts.
In fact, social networking is a major focus for this product; the numerous connectivity options come into play here, allowing you to keep in touch on the move with friends and family via favourite sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The device integrates nicely, and provides live updates so you can see what your friends have to share wherever, whenever.
Media is well catered for, with a built in digital media player supporting multiple formats for both video and audio. Popular formats such as MP3, WMA, MP4 and WMV are all included, and media playback is enhanced with the inclusion of DNSe on the phone. This proprietary audio enhancement technology offers various options for changing the playback quality of your music, from selections such as Concert Hall, Bass Extension and Street Mode. And if those are not to your liking, you can also create your own presets, too. Default music keys on the phone make music playback as simple as possible, allowing you to control playback, select tracks and control volume all from the main standby of the phone.
There is plenty of room on the phone for storing media, as the M5650 supports MicroSD memory cards, up to 8GB in size, which builds on the built in memory of 50MB. As well as a music player, the device also offers a stereo FM radio with RDS support, and there is also a find music recognition service, which operates in a similar manner to TrackID, which is found on most Sony Ericsson handsets.
All round, then, the M5650 Lindy from Samsung is a strong device, with a wealth of features, available at a competitive price, which should make it popular on the Prepay market.
