Samsung M6710 Beat Disc PreviewAnother addition to the Samsung Beat Music range handsets, the Samsung Beat Disc M6710 is a slightly lower featured sibling of the Beat DJ M7600. However, it has in its own right a solid feature set that will appeal to people who want to combine music portability with their mobile communication requirements. A compact slide phone, the M7610 measures less than 15mm thick. When closed, the device is dominated by the large 2.6” TFT touchscreen. Supporting up to 16 million colours, the screen pixel count is 240 x 400, which all adds up to superb clarity. The handset has a built in accelerometer for auto screen rotation, ideal for viewing images and browsing the web. Slid open, the M7610 reveals a traditional alpha numeric 12 key keypad. Keys are rather flat, and the keypad is slightly curved to follow the natural curve of the handset design. However, this does not impact usability and text entry is not an issue.

The User Interface is the new, improved, TouchWiz interface. TouchWiz allows you to customise the standby screen by dragging widgets from the side navigation bar. Widgets are available for the music player, radio, clock and calendar, amongst others. Underneath the main screen there are touch sensitive controls for the music player.

Inside, Samsung have used some top end technology to ensure your music pleasure from the M6710 is an enjoyable experience. The audio technology used on the device is licensed from Bang and Olufsen, so you can be assured music playback is going to be excellent. The music player supports a wide range of digital formats, including MP3, AAC and WMA. Samsung have also included a 3.5mm audio output jack on the handset, which is the absolute minimum requirement for a music focussed handset. Alongside the music player, there is also an FM radio built in, with the option for 20 preset stations to be stored.

Onboard, the handset is endowed with 80MB of memory, which can be expanded up to 16GB with a Micro SD memory card.

Other features on the device show the M6710 to be aimed squarely at the mid range music, and should feature well on low end tariff options as well as Prepay. These include a fixed focus 3.2 megapixel point ‘n’ shoot camera, and a host of data connection options, but sadly, no WiFi. The camera is going to offer good pictures, but not great. Clearly, if images are important to you, then this is not the device to buy. With support for HSDPA Mobile Broadband, web browsing is very smooth and fast. The HSDPA speed available with the M7610 is up to 7.2 Mbps, which is faster than some top end smartphones. Samsung have also included support for stereo Bluetooth, v2.1. This allows for music playback to a compatible wireless headset. Version 2.1 of Bluetooth should also allow for easier pairing of Bluetooth devices and also is more battery friendly, as it consumes less power when in sniff mode. Sniff mode is when the handset Bluetooth feature is turned on, and ready to connect to another device.

The Samsung Beat Disc is a solid handset, with some nice features and high quality audio playback. Design wise it is nothing special, it remains to be seen if this handset offers enough to promote itself over its mid market competitors.
