With the M7600 Beat DJ handset, Samsung are proving it is still possible to produce fun handsets with stand out design, without having to compromise on the feature set the phone offers. The M7600 in fact has a solid range of options, enough to keep even the most demanding of users happy. It seems that music is being given a lot of focus by manufacturers right now. It’s a few years since handsets that focus on music playing capability were released to market, and the success of music phones is ideally presented in the Sony Ericsson Walkman range. Recently, Nokia have been knocking on the door with a whole host of Xpress Music phones being announced, and now Samsung are inviting themselves to the party with the Beat Music range.
The Samsung M7600 Beat DJ stands out from the competition immediately, thanks to the novel curved shape. With a curved edge at top and bottom, the smooth design flows well, and will feel very comfortable to hold. The handset weighs in at less than 100g, and is less than 14mm in thickness. Aside from the design, one thing that instantly catches the eye is the glorious OLED touchscreen. OLED screens have some advantages over the standard TFT screen generally used on mobile phones – Colours appear sharper, there is no need for a backlight, and this means that there is less strain put on the handset battery. The M7600 screen supports up to 16 million colours, and the clarity is instantly noticeable.
The user interface on the device is the latest version of the TouchWiz UI, as found on handset like the Tocco. Icons are well spaced out, and all features on the handset are optimised for finger navigation. TouchWiz allows for full customisation of the standby screen, with the use of onscreen widgets. These widgets are generally located on a navigation bar, located to the left of the screen. This navigation bar can be hidden and made visible by tapping the little arrow tab on the side, located towards the bottom left. Widgets from the navigation bar can be dragged onto the screen, allowing for quick and easy access to the associated application. Once finished, the widget can be dragged back to the navigation bar until needed again. I like this idea of easy home screen customisation, and this is something other manufacturers could take a lesson from.
The music player on the handset, as well as playing back your music collection, has a DJ Mixer application that allows you to tweak music on your phone to your own satisfaction. Options available are REC, filters, samples and scratch; start recording your creation with REC – the application presents an old style image of a vinyl record – scratch the tune by rotating your finger around the screen, add filters from the list of 10 available (two can be used at any time) and add a sample from the pre-installed samples library. The application is a lot of fun, and it doesn’t take much imagination to see how this will appeal to the youth market at which the handset is clearly aimed.
A camera is also included on the device, a solid 3.2 megapixel offering with autofocus and LED flash. You can add Geotags to captured images thanks to the inclusion of a built in GPS receiver. There are also camera features such as face and smile detection included, and video can be captured at up to 15 fps.
All round, this is a solid little device from Samsung. Backing up the above, there is inclusion of HSDPA data transfer, ideal for downloading tunes on the go, as well as Bluetooth 2.0 for wireless audio streaming. Onboard memory sits at 50MB, which can be expanded up to 16GB with Micro SD memory cards, offering ample space for songs, images and video clips.
The M7600 Beat DJ is clearly aimed at a youthful market. With an excellent music player and good quality camera, the M7600 offers a convergence device that is easy to navigate via the excellent TouchWiz interface. No official release date as yet, watch this space for updates.
