Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 handsetSamsung have certainly been busy of late, launching a whole host of phones, with a variety of operating systems, and in various formats. We’ve seen slide phones, touch screen phones, full blown smartphones, and increasingly we are seeing handsets with a focus on messaging on the move. Getting access to email whilst out and about is getting easier and easier, with many phones now able to complete email setup for you; all you need is your username and password, no need to mess around with POP or SMTP settings. The Samsung B7610 Omnia Pro is a handset with a clear focus on messaging, and thanks to the built in QWERTY keyboard, entering text has never been easier or quicker. The keys are well spaced, with good feedback, and it would be hard to mis-type by hitting the wrong key for even the largest of fingers.

The Omnia Pro has full email support, and can handle multiple accounts, so you can set up personal and business accounts on the one device. Running on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Omnia Pro has many functions that will appeal to the person on the move who needs to keep in touch. Aside from email, the B7610 can handle instant messaging, and also has a built in RSS reader, so you can stay on top of the latest updates from your favourite websites. Pocket Office allows you to view various email attachment types, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF. High speed data connections are numerous, with the Omnia Pro offering 3.5G HSDPA at up to 3.6bps, as well as offering WiFi with DLNA support. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a common standard used by electronics manufacturers, which allows various devices from different providers to communicate and share content simply over a wireless connection. As well as these, the B7610 Omnia Pro offers full support for Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, as well as the full suite of backup connection options, GPRS, HSCSD and EDGE.

Interaction with the B7610 is via the large AMOLED resistive touchscreen, which supports up to 16 million colours. Using an AMOLED display is a useful way of conserving battery power, which is all important on a device such as the Omnia Pro. An AMOLED display doesn’t need a backlight, is brighter and needs less power to operate than conventional screens. The screen on the B7610 measures in at 3.5 inches across, and has a pixel resolution of 800 x 480, ideal for viewing videos and makes menu navigation much easier. The dimensions are nothing special, the B7610 is a fairly hefty device, but given all the features it has, this is probably a trade off worth making. The device measures 112.6 x 57.8 x 16.2mm and weighs in at 159g.

For all the business features offered, it is worth noting that there is more to the B7610 Omnia Pro than just work, and functionality. Offering a ‘Work and Life’ mode, you can flip between different profiles on the handset, with each profile being set up for either an office or home option. The device is a capable, fully featured, multimedia powerhouse, delivering a 5.0 Megapixel camera, with autofocus and LED flash. Features include a panorama shot, where you can stitch multiple shots together to create a panoramic effect, and best shot, which will capture multiple images with one button press, and from these you can choose which you will keep, with the others being instantly deleted. The handset has a built in GPS receiver, which, as well as offering location and navigation support with mapping software, also allows captured images on the phone to be ‘geotagged’, which stores the location an picture was taken in the digital file of the image.

Entertainment is also well catered for, the media player is one of the best around on any device, with support for numerous digital file types, including MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WMA and WAV for music and Mpeg4, 3gp, DivX and XviD for video playback. With a 3.5mm audio output jack you can listen in private with your own favourite headphones, in complete comfort. We also find the phone has a TV OUT option, so you can connect the device to a suitable TV with a TV OUT cable, allowing you to see what is on the screen of the phone on a larger TV screen. This is ideal for playing back video, or viewing captured images, and can also be an option when browsing the web.

There is a lot to like about this phone. Samsung have delivered a device that has broad appeal across a wide range of market sectors; ideal for the businessman on the move, for those who need access to email whenever, wherever, and for those who want a high powered media device, the B7610 Omnia Pro caters for all. We await an official release date from Samsung.
