It seems there is no let up in Samsung’s determination to become the number one handset manufacturer in the world, as we have notice of even more devices that will swell their already large ranks of mid range handsets. It seems that Samsung are determined to keep on producing high quality touch screen devices, to flood the market with their products, so whatever you are looking for, prepay, contract, low, mid or high use, there will be a Samsung device to suit your needs.

The Samsung S7070 is another in this long line of Samsung touchscreen handsets, sporting a large, 3.0 inch TFT resistive display, supporting up to 256,000 colours and with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels. The S7070 runs the eye catching TouchWiz UI, which offers a smooth, flowing menu system, which is easy to navigate and logically laid out. Samsung like to use colourful icons, which present well on their TFT displays, and the TouchWiz UI lends itself well to this. From the main screen it will be possible to populate the display with a variety of widget style shortcuts which are ordinarily hidden from view on a slide out menu taskbar.

Near the bottom of the display is a small tab, and pressing on this brings the taskbar into full view. A widget shortcut is available for many options, from calendar, and ring profile, to accessing sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Widgets are selected by pressing down and holding the icon; then, simply drag the icon to the part of the display where you want it. Removing icons is just as easy – simply press and hold an icon until it vibrates, then drag it back to the taskbar. One of the benefits of the TouchWiz UI is even the network name can be dragged from the screen and hidden in the taskbar, ideal if you want an unblocked view of your wallpaper. There’s nothing worse than having a great picture of a loved one, just to have part of the view obscured by the network name.

The S7070 does little to distinguish itself from other devices in terms of design and looks – the formula is pretty basic, and the S7070 follows it to a ‘T’. Measuring 101 x 55 x 14mm, the S7070 weighs in at 94g. Underneath the main display are three buttons, using the same layout as found on the popular Samsung Blade, with a large menu key flanked either side by send/end keys. Memory storage on the handset is ample, and can be expanded with MicroSD memory cards, a feature now that is so common on even the cheapest of handsets it is more of a talking point to note when a phone does *not* have this feature than when it does!

The camera on the S7070 is one of the more standout features. Enabled as it is with a 5.0 Megapixel camera, with autofocus, snaps captured on the handset will be crisp and clean, and certainly good enough to share with friends by uploading them to the web or sending them via email thanks to the built in email client, which will support multiple email accounts. The camera is also capable of capturing video clips, at QVGA resolution, which is perfect for YouTube.

The S7070 is a capable media device, with music and video playback available via the media player, which has a clean design, and is simple to use, Media stored on the phone can be listed via artist, album, genre or composer, and you can also create your own playlists from your stored music. The S7070 supports multiple codecs, including MP4, H.263, H.264, MP3 and eAAC+. Complimentary to this the handset also has a Stereo FM Radio with RDS, and there is also an FM recording option, which allows you to record directly from the radio to the handset memory. Full Java support is included on the phone, which allows applications such as Gmail, Yahoo and Opera Mini to be downloaded to the phone, as well as many popular games.

It is hard to see a particular niche for the S7070, most likely it will just compliment rather than replace any existing devices in the Samsung line-up. There is still no official release date for the Samsung S7070, but it is fully expected to hit the market during Q1 2010.
