Today Sky has launched Sky Go for Android handsets, with the app initially available for a select range of HTC and Samsung devices.
After months of waiting, the app, which streams live Sky TV transmissions to your mobile device, is available to download from the Android Market.
The app has been available for some time now for iOS users, with a version available for the iPhone and iPad. The Android version is not currently compatible with Android Tablets, which should be added in a future update.
Sky let it be known that they were working on an Android version of Sky Go back in November, and then in January suggested it should be available in February. The list of devices the app is compatible with at launch is:
- HTC Desire
- HTC Desire S
- HTC Desire HD
- HTC Incredible S
- HTC Sensation
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Galaxy S II
Users of these Android handsets will be able to access all five Sky Sports channels, plus all eleven Sky Movies channels, as well as ESPN and Sky News. Just recently Sky also added Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts 1 to the Sky Go app, and the soon to be launched Sky Sports F1 channel is also expected to be added at launch.
It's also worth noting that Sky Go works on devices running Android 2.2 and 2.3. Compatibility with Android 4.0 will be added in a future update. It also seems that Sky Go will not work on rooted devices, probably due to DRM restrictions.
“We are extremely happy to announce the roll out of Sky Go on selected Android handsets today and the arrival of the Sky Entertainment channels to mobile devices,” said Holly Knill, Head of Sky Go. “We are always working to ensure that Sky customers have more ways to watch the content they love, whether it is the big Premiership game, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Modern Family or Ruth Jones' Stella, and this is exactly what this enhanced version of Sky Go delivers.”
