Sony Ericsson T715
Continuing the trend for snappy little slider devices, Sony Ericsson have announced the imminent release of another product in their line-up, the Sony Ericsson T715. This smart looking device is a natural pocket phone, weighing in at only 96g and measuring 91.5mm x 48mm x 14.9mm. The display on the device is a very good 2.2 inches, TFT screen supporting up to 256,000 colours.

Sony Ericsson claims that the screen has been designed in such a way as to offer good legibility in direct sunlight, which is a real bonus. However, it would be nice to see Sony Ericsson start to offers displays with much better colour support. After a period of time using Nokia devices, moving over to Sony Ericsson you can easily see how washed out the colours look in comparison. Given that Samsung have started to support a much better colour definition, along with producing AMOLED screens, Sony Ericsson really need to consider upgrading the specification of their displays.
One nice touch on this phone is Sony Ericsson’s continuing support for Micro SD cards in place of the proprietary M” cards they stuck with for so long. Given that almost all over manufacturers now use micro SD cards, moving information from one device to another when one of them is a Sony Ericsson is going to become much easier. The T715 will support cards up to 8GB in size, a nice compliment to the internal memory capacity of 90MB.
The T715 offers a 3.2 Megapixel camera, which has an LED flash but sadly does not include autofocus, like many recent SE handsets seem to lack. So, for a ‘point ‘n’ shoot’ camera, the T715 is passable, but don’t expect anything too special. The camera is also enabled for video recording, but following on from the recent track record, I wouldn’t hold any hope of this device offering anything special. The inclusion of Geotagging, the recording of location information in the digital file of the image is a nice touch, and this works by Cell ID triangulation. This may not be as accurate as using GPS, but it allows for quicker lock on and uses less battery power.
Sony Ericsson has always produced solid devices when it comes to multimedia and entertainment, and the T715 doesn’t disappoint here, either. A full media player is included, with support for all the popular music and video digital files commonly found on a mobile device. There is also a native YouTube application found on the T715, so you can browse and view YouTube videos on your phone, wherever you are. The T715 is a full 3G phone, with HSDPA mobile broadband speed, so streaming video shouldn’t be an issue whenever you are in high speed data coverage. Other applications on the T715 include Google Maps, and Track ID. Blogger support is also available, so if you have a compatible Blog, you can send posts to your blog for publish wherever you are.
The T715 also offers a nice little twist on the usual Sony Ericsson operating system, here supporting something called Smart Desktop. This allows you to keep up to date with your appointments directly from the homescreen, and you can also add little electronic post it notes too, to help remind you of the little things that are easily forgotten in a hectic modern life.
The Sony Ericsson T715 may not hit the heights of the all singing all doing devices, but then, it isn’t really supposed to. Aimed squarely at the mid range contract and high end Prepay user, the T715 incorporates a solid set of features in a very attractive design, and promises to be very popular. Release date Q3 2009
