Samsung C5510Another of the new handsets recently announced by Samsung, the C5510 joins a very crowded mid range market. Samsung seem to do well with their slide phones, this has always proved to be a popular product from the Korean manufacturer and on the face of it, it would appear that the C5510 is destined to be just as popular. However, taking things at face value in the mobile industry isn’t always the best way to judge a device, so we are going to take a look in more detail at the specification of this device to see if it has what it takes to sell, and sell well.

Encased in a silver colour metallic frame, the shell is scratch resistant, so should bear up well to the rough and tumble of living in a pocket with keys and change, or at the bottom of a ladies handbag. The display is a well sized 2.2 inch QVGA LCD, but only supports up to 256,000 colours, which may cause legibility problems in bright sunlight.

The front of the phone is clearly Samsung in design, under the display we find nothing more than the two soft option keys, send/end keys, and the square shaped navigation key. Slid open, the C5510 reveals a comfortable looking alpha numeric keypad, with well spaced keys that should make for easy texting. The keypad has 15 keys rather than the usual 12, the very top row house the menu shortcuts, web browser and cancel button, similar to that found on the Samsung Steel. A full GSM quad band handset, the C5510 also supports 3G and HSDPA, for quick mobile browsing and downloading. There is no WiFi on this device, but that is most likely to help keep down the costs of the product. Although Samsung have found plenty of room for a good sized display and a comfortable keyboard, they have not compromised on the size of the handset overall, with the C5510 measuring in at just 15.3mm thick, and weighing in at a very respectable 97g.

Feature wise it would be fair to say the Samsung C5510 is nothing special. It comes with a 2.0 Megapixel camera, which is not as full featured as found on other devices this product will be competing with. Autofocus is included, which will help with picture clarity, but further specifications seem to be limited to just smile detection. Video recording is enabled, and should be of an acceptable quality to upload to sites such as YouTube.

A media player is included, and will support the various popular digital music formats such as MP3, AAC and WMA. Video playback supports MPEG4 and WMV. Internal memory is rather low, at just 20MB, but thankfully this can be expanded by adding a Micro SD card, up to 16GB, plenty of room for hundreds of music tracks, images and videos. There is support for the latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 2.1, which offer hassle free pairing via Bluetooth, and also offers stereo sound to a wireless headset. An FM stereo radio is included on the phone, so you can keep up to date with all the latest hits as well as news and traffic reports by tuning in to your favourite FM radio station.

Overall, the Samsung C5510 is fairly low spec. It will most likely sell well to people who like a good looking, uncomplicated phone, as well as being a popular device with handset giveaways on contract, and will most likely find its way onto the pay as you go product list of most of the major UK networks. Release date Q3 2009.
