Three have announced a new service based around their popular MiFi dongle, which allows you to create a personal WiFi hotspot wherever you happen to be. The MiFi dongle connects to the Three network, and allows you to connect your WiFi enabled device to it and browse the web. Very simple and easy to set up and use.
The new service is designed for use in car (obviously for passengers only, whilst the vehicle is in motion!) and will be a boon for those long journeys with the kids in the back of the car. With the in-car service, WiFi enabled devices can connect to the web, view and reply to email, download video on demand, shop online or connect with friends via social networking sites. Should hopefully keep the kids quiet on long journeys, at least, and can be good for listening to internet radio with compatible equipment, or those online music streaming services. Press release from Three below:
In Car Wi-Fi has arrived on 3
Today, 3UK launches In Car Wi-Fi at The Gadget Show, Birmingham. The compact modem is based on 3’s popular MiFi device giving you a Wi-Fi internet connection in your car.
In Car Wi-Fi connects over the 3G network to create a personal Wi-Fi hotspot so passengers can connect to the internet on a range of Wi-Fi enabled devices like an iPod Touch, Nintendo DSi XL and Netbook, all without the need for wires or a USB connection.
David Kerrigan, Head of Internet Services at 3 UK says “We’re always looking at new products and services that connect our customers in more place both at home and on the move and In Car Wi-Fi does this. Our research* suggests that over 25% of the population are interested in having the internet in their cars, with families and travelling work colleagues showing the most interest. Mobile workers can check traffic information and email on route to a meeting and kids can social network or download tracks to an iPod Touch while on a road trip”
Setting up In Car Wi-Fi is simple. Just switch on the Mi- Fi device, connect your iPod Touch, Nintendo DSI XL or Netbook, put in the eight digit network key and you’re connected to the internet.
